The Great Christmas Gold Robbery took place on Christmas Day in 1878.
More than $1 million dollars worth of gold coins were stolen from The Western Mutual United Bank by El Diablo, otherwise known as Diego Valdez. They were then hidden in his home in San Francisco, California, by his wife, Lizzie Applegate, and remained undiscovered until 2000 when Nancy Drew found them in the house, now belonging to Rose Green.
Lizzie set up a number of puzzles in order for Diego to solve in the house in order to find the gold, but he never returned from his quests. She even wrote her 1880 hit The Bandit's Treasure as a clue.
Charlie Murphy did his term paper on the robbery.
